PATCHWORK: When God Was A Black Woman

"When God Was A Black Woman"

Patchwork Fabric and Mix Media, 2019-21.

"The sexuality of Christ is no accident, nor is his masculinity. This is the divine choice."
Bishop C.L. Meyers
San Francisco Chronicle, 1971.

One can argue that the white Father God won the supreme battle of the deities. But, has he really?

After reading the book "When God Was A Woman" by Merlin Stone and sewing this quilt, my fascination with the history of the Goddess did not end. On the contrary, I pushed my readings further, and soon, I realized that Merlin had missed a critical archeological point: The skin color of the Goddess.  The lightening of eyes and skin took place approximately 10000 BC and 6000 BC, respectively. In fact, research published in a journal called Nature, by the Institute of Evolutionary Biology in Barcelona, revealed a hunter-gatherer with blue eyes and dark skin. He lived in Europe 7000 years ago. With this in mind, we can assume with certainty that at the dawn of religion, the Goddess was a Black Woman. Therefore, upon this realization, it became imperative to insert "Black" into Merlin's quote.

"At the beginning there was nothing, but SHE was everything. SHE expanded the universe, made the land, trees, flowers, and animals. One day, from her womb, a man was born. Together, they carved a child who also was born from HER womb; and for that, SHE will always be everything. The Goddess of life, earthly and heavenly."
